The cashier always strikes thrice

Apparently there is a new generation of checkouts in the supermarkets now. The kind that is sensitive to the direction from which you pass the products when you check out. Let me tell you how I found out about this technological marvel.
The other day, I went to Tesco with a friend. He bought a magazine and a few yoghurts. At the express check out, the cashier asked him for over 1000 Kc! Hem... Something seemed to be wrong in this picture, and we tried to make the woman understand it, while she actively worked at having my friend type in the PIN code of his credit card.
When finally we managed to convince her that this figure could not possibly be correct, she discovered that the magazine had been counted three times! How this was possible, she had no problem to explain to us: My friend had passed the magazine to her through the left side of the check out, and so it was counted three times by the machine...
Hem again...
Of course, she had to call her boss to cancel this, and she did not hesitate to tell us that now SHE would be blamed for this, as if it was really my friend who was at fault.
So now everyone, be warned: Beware of this new generation of check outs that register everything three times, depending on which side the products are passed. More than one unsuspecting customer will be ripped if they do not pay attention...
